How to do the Lat Pulldown
Muscles worked: latissimus dorsi (the wide muscles of your back), upper back and biceps.
The lat pulldown trains the same muscles as a pull-up, but you choose the weight. It is the usual first step toward pull-ups and it builds a stronger upper back.

- Start the pull by moving your shoulder blades down, then bend the elbows.
- Aim your elbows at your back pockets.
- Keep your chest tall, not curled forward.
Common mistakes and fixes
Pulling the bar behind the neck
Always pull to your upper chest. Behind the neck strains the shoulders.
Swinging back to heave the weight
Choose a lighter weight and keep only a small lean.
Using only the arms
Think of pulling with your elbows, with your shoulder blades dropping first.
Avoid: Pulling the bar behind your neck, or swinging your body.
How heavy should you start?
Begin with a weight you can control for 10 to 12 reps while your torso stays still. If the bar jerks at the bottom, it is too heavy.
The method works for any lift: see how much weight a beginner should lift and sets, reps and rest.
Alternatives
If the machine is busy or you cannot use it, try: Assisted pull-up machine or Single-arm cable pulldown.
Questions about the lat pulldown
Wide grip or close grip on the lat pulldown?
A grip a little wider than your shoulders is a good default. Very wide grips shorten the range and add shoulder stress without much extra benefit.
Will the lat pulldown help me do a pull-up?
Yes. It builds the same muscles. Once you can pull your own body weight's worth of stack for 10 clean reps, try an assisted pull-up.
Exercises that go well with it
Seated Cable RowBack · 10 to 12 reps
Dumbbell CurlArms · 10 to 12 reps
Dumbbell Shoulder PressShoulders · 10 to 12 reps
Stop a set if you feel sharp pain, pinching or numbness, and ask a doctor or physiotherapist about it. Normal muscle burn is fine. Joint pain is not.
