Common mistakes and fixes

Seat too high or too low

The handles should line up with the middle of your chest. If you feel it mostly in your shoulders, change the seat.

Shoulders rolling forward

Pin your shoulder blades back and down against the pad before you press.

Bouncing the weight off your chest

Use a lighter stack and take 2 to 3 seconds to return.

Avoid: Shrugging your shoulders up or locking your elbows. Stop if your shoulder, elbow or wrist hurts.

How heavy should you start?

Pick a weight that lets you do 10 to 12 smooth reps with 2 left in reserve. Two light sets in the first month is enough while your joints and tendons catch up.

The method works for any lift: see how much weight a beginner should lift and sets, reps and rest.

Alternatives

If the machine is busy or you cannot use it, try: Dumbbell bench press or Incline machine press.

Questions about the chest press (machine)

Is the machine chest press as good as a barbell bench press?

For a beginner it is a good start. The machine controls the path, which lowers the skill needed and the risk of the weight pinning you. You can move to free weights later.

Why do my shoulders hurt on the chest press?

Usually the seat is set wrong or the shoulders are rolled forward. Fix the setup first. If it still hurts, stop and have it checked. Stop a set if you feel sharp pain, pinching or numbness, and ask a doctor or physiotherapist about it. Normal muscle burn is fine. Joint pain is not.
