How to do the Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Muscles worked: shoulders (deltoids) and triceps, with the upper chest and upper back helping to stabilise.

The seated dumbbell shoulder press builds strong, rounded shoulders. Using dumbbells lets each arm find its own path, which is kinder to the joints than a fixed bar.

Common mistakes and fixes

Arching the lower back

Use lighter dumbbells and squeeze your glutes against the seat.

Going too heavy too soon

The shoulder is a small joint. Start with 4 to 6 kg dumbbells and add slowly.

Flaring the elbows straight out

Point your elbows slightly in front of your body, about 45 degrees.

Avoid: Arching your lower back. Go lighter if you feel it.

How heavy should you start?

Pick dumbbells you can press for 10 to 12 reps without leaning back. Many beginners start between 4 and 6 kg each.

The method works for any lift: see how much weight a beginner should lift and sets, reps and rest.

Alternatives

If the machine is busy or you cannot use it, try: Machine shoulder press or Landmine press.

Questions about the dumbbell shoulder press

Seated or standing shoulder press?

Seated is easier to learn because the bench supports your back. Standing uses more of your core and is a later step.

How heavy should shoulder press dumbbells be?

Light. If you cannot finish 10 clean reps, or your back arches, drop down in weight.

Exercises that go well with it

Stop a set if you feel sharp pain, pinching or numbness, and ask a doctor or physiotherapist about it. Normal muscle burn is fine. Joint pain is not.
